A confidential source has told a parliamentary probe that British authorities left behind confidential equipment allowing Afghanistan's rulers to identify Afghans who collaborated with international military.

Information Leak Puts Thousands at Risk

Person A, identified as Person A, explained that individuals impacted by the security lapse were instructed to change residences and alter their mobile numbers to protect themselves from militant forces.

MPs are looking into the Conservative government's management of a catastrophic leak of personal details affecting approximately 19k Afghans who had requested to come to Britain to flee militant rule.

The Information Breach Was Discovered

An electronic document containing private information, comprising names, contact details and occasionally household data, was inadvertently disclosed by a worker working at UK special forces headquarters in last year.

The leak was discovered in late 2023, when identities of multiple applicants who had requested to relocate to Britain appeared on online platforms.

Preliminary research presented to the inquiry suggested that approximately fifty kin and co-workers of individuals impacted by the incident had been executed.

A legal restriction about the breach was put in force in late 2023 and restricted all details regarding the matter from being made public until mid-2025.

Due to legal constraints, the source and the non-governmental organization she collaborated with advised affected households they were working with that they had “concerns that somebody's phone had been breached”.

“We recommended that they moved when possible and switched their mobile numbers. Those were the crucial data that, should militant forces obtained such data, would lead to them being traced,” the source testified.

Challenged Assessments

The whistleblower argued that government assessment conducted by an ex-government employee had been mistaken to state that the acquisition of the dataset by militant forces was “unlikely to substantially change present danger”.

“The crucial point is that these Afghans are not confronting militant forces; they live secretly. The primary issue involves former occupations.”

The source explained disturbing violence endured by affected individuals, involving electric shock torture, waterboarding, and violent assaults.

“There are cases of young kids who have had their arms broken to force relatives to reveal locations,” the whistleblower revealed.
