Antony Price, Famed for Designing for David Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the influential style architect behind some of the most iconic looks associated with David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has passed away at the age of 80.
His reputation was built on his architectural shapes and performative fashion, including the light-hued ensembles that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's classic music video for "the song Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement online."
His passing follows just weeks after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Artist Lily Allen modelled a dress evoking the notorious black velvet "dress" once worn by Princess Diana.
A Lasting Legacy
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price moved to London during the sixties to attend the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he began designing men's fashion at the label Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger sported during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show was launched by creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who later wore the bridal gown Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A frequent collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price created the memorable jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to blend elements of men's and women's fashion along with his expert craftsmanship in designing sculptural silhouettes made him a "true original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he started creating ensembles for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, which included several ensembles for her US tour after becoming Duchess.
After a career spanning over fifty years, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in conjunction with the label 16Arlington.
