California is Entirely Drought-Free for the First Instance in Two and a Half Decades.

For the first time in 25 years, no portion of California is facing dryness. This significant achievement comes on the heels of difficult years marked by below-average rain that exacerbated fire dangers and challenged its huge agribusiness.

An Update Indicates An Absence of Drought

Thursday's report from the federal monitoring program illustrated that all of California is free from drought or abnormal dryness. This change resulted from multiple significant storms that topped up key lakes like the state's largest lakes exceeding their historic averages.

“To those aged 25 and below you’ve spent your life in a world where California has been grappling with drought,” noted a climate scientist.

After Severe Systems to Wet Holidays

Achieving this status featured intense and deadly winter storms that pummeled the state in recent years, leading to extensive inundation, power outages, and fatalities. Although that weather began to alleviate the drought, they weren't enough to erase it completely.

Even into late December, regions like northeastern California were still classified as abnormally dry. Substantial precipitation at the start of the new year finally erased those final dry conditions.

Essential Mountain Snowfall Is Below Average

Yet, authorities caution that the end of drought status should not be confused with being out of the woods. Latest data of the mountain snow accumulation place it at roughly seven-tenths of the historical norm.

This snowpack, which provides approximately 30% of the state's usable water as it thaws later in the year, is a key piece for the year ahead. Hydrology managers stress that it is premature to draw conclusions for the months ahead.

“The current pattern right now is increased rainfall over snowfall,” explained a state water resources manager. “Our hope is for the snow accumulation to improve by the start of April so that we’re approaching the typical mark.”

Although the monitor shows a clean slate, the next challenge is to maintaining this precious water balance for the months to come.
