NY Launches Portal for Residents to Submit Immigration Images Following Detentions of 4 US Citizens
New York state AG has rolled out a fresh reporting form urging residents to share images and footage of immigration raids across the state. This action comes just a day after a significant enforcement action rattled Chinatown in Manhattan, prompting widespread demonstrations.
American Citizens Arrested In ICE Operation
A US congressman disclosed during a midweek briefing that four American citizens were arrested and detained for "nearly 24 hours" after the previous day's operation. Rallies broke out in the city on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.
"Each citizen deserves to exist without intimidation," the attorney general wrote in a release.
"For those who saw and captured federal operations during the raid, I encourage you to submit that evidence with my office. We are dedicated to reviewing these reports and investigating any legal breaches."
Form Details
The platform provides spaces to submit photos and videos of the incident, as well as a field to indicate geographic details. When submitting, submitters must mark a box that acknowledges that "authorities might employ any evidence provided in a public document, such as in a lawsuit or official statement."
Information about the Chinatown Raid
The Manhattan operation, which observers say involved over fifty ICE personnel, happened in a famous district of NYC where fake products and additional items are commonly traded widely – typically to tourists.
Videos of the operation reveal numerous covered and weaponized officers restraining and arresting a person, and pushing back bystanders. Masses of locals pursued the officers down the sidewalks. An armored truck was noticed moving along the urban roads.
Leadership Statements
In a Wednesday press conference organized with the New York immigrant rights coalition, Representative Goldman, a Democratic representative, announced that four American citizens were taken by federal agents for almost a full day and that there were "no situations where nationals should be taken for without cause." He said the citizens were let go on Wednesday with no charges filed.
"The goal is evident here. It is not about removing offenders," the congressman remarked. "This constitutes a armed campaign to incite tension. It is merely a pretext to generate turmoil for the government to deploy the troops to prevent violence that they have created."
Broad Criticism
Fury over the federal action quickly spread – all three mayoral candidates criticized the incident, along with the state leader.
"Repeatedly, the federal government chooses oppressive displays that create fear, rather than security. It must stop," one mayoral candidate declared.
New York City advocacy organizations spoke out too.
"Federal officers targeted Chinatown in NYC with armored transports, hooded officers and protective equipment to go after street vendors attempting to earn income. This operation had no relation to public safety and focused completely on intimidating residents and areas," said the president of a advocacy group.
ICE Policies
Agency rules bans the detention of US citizens and the agency has stated it will not arrest or detain US citizens. Yet, independent reporting has discovered that more than 170 citizens have been detained unlawfully by federal agents during the period of the current administration.
Ongoing Trend
Enforcement actions have been rising in frequency in the state and around the country this year.
A recent action in the city center was the first known raid on an housing center of the present government. Protests targeting federal operations are ubiquitous along with allegations of aggression and abusive practices.
Most recently, a document provided by legal entities alleged inadequate care of expectant mothers in government custody.
