Outrage Erupts as Trump's Comments on Director Rob Reiner Draws Sharp Rebuke
Individuals from both sides of the political aisle and the entertainment industry are coming together to condemn Donald Trump for his statements in the wake of the shocking deaths of renowned filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
A Provocative Social Media Post
After the couple were found dead at their Brentwood home, Trump posted on his platform to describe the deceased director as "tortured and struggling". In a message, he claimed Reiner's demise was "due to the hostility he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable condition with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
The post quickly shifted to praising his own achievements, juxtaposing Reiner's supposed "intense obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump described as the "Golden Age of America".
Law Enforcement Update and Detention
Authorities have since confirmed the detention of the Reiners' 32-year-old son, Nick, on charges related to homicide in relation to the incident. Reports indicate his bond was established at a significant sum.
A Wave of Criticism from Celebrities and Politicians
The response to Trump's post was swift and scathing.
“What a appalling and despicable statement,” said actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a friend, also condemned the statements. She pointed to prior comments from Trump regarding political violence, demanding, "Do you have no decency? Can you get any lower?"
California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly stated, "This is a disturbed man."
Mirroring this sentiment, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "He is a contemptible piece of garbage."
Senator Chris Murphy added, "He's just lost it. Now saying Rob and Michele Reiner brought on their own murder because they didn’t support him. So sick."
Criticism from Within Political Ranks
A number of GOP elected officials also expressed dismay.
Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the event was "a family tragedy, not about political feuds or political enemies". She also mentioned struggles with substance abuse and mental health some families face.
Fellow GOP representative, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's discourse "inappropriate and disrespectful" given the nature of the deaths. He openly challenged members in his political party to defend the statements.
Reiner's Legacy and Views on Trump
Rob Reiner was consistently a vocal detractor of Donald Trump. In a previous conversation, he stated Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the office. He had also warned about the risks of authoritarian rule if Trump be reelected to power.
"We see authoritarianism on the rise around the world," Reiner said. "If we crumble, there’s a risk that democratic systems crumble around the world."
Regardless of his pointed opposition, Reiner had previously expressed "absolute horror" and denounced violence for political ends unequivocally after the shooting of a different political figure.
An Ironic Connection: The Art of the Deal
Providing a layer of historical connection, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the artist who captured the cover image for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had once recounted the anecdote of the session, noting Trump's demand for "special hairspray" as being photographed on a skyscraper overlooking Central Park.
