Preparations for Putin-Trump Meeting Delayed Days Following Hungarian Capital Talks Proposed

Currently exist "no plans" for American leader Donald Trump to confer with Russian President Putin "anytime soon", a administration representative has announced.

Recently the US president indicated he and the Russian president would hold talks in Hungary's capital within two weeks to address the ongoing hostilities.

A preparatory meeting between US Secretary of State Secretary Rubio and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov was scheduled to occur recently - but the administration clarified the two had had a "positive" conversation and that a face-to-face session was not "necessary".

The administration declined to provide further information on why the talks had been delayed.

Previous Developments

Trump had discussed a Budapest summit over the phone with Putin, a just prior to hosting Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky in the White House.

Certain accounts indicated his talks with the Ukrainian leader had been a "shouting match", with insiders claiming the president had pushed him to cede significant territories of eastern Ukraine as part of a deal with Russia.

Yet, on this week the American president embraced a ceasefire proposal endorsed by Kyiv and EU officials to freeze the conflict on the existing battle lines.

"Let it be cut where it stands," he remarked.

Russia has consistently objected against freezing the existing front lines.

The Russian government was solely focused on "enduring stability", Lavrov commented on Tuesday, implying that pausing conflict would only amount to a temporary ceasefire.

Diplomatic Positions

The "root causes" of the conflict required resolution, Lavrov stated, using Kremlin shorthand for a series of maximalist demands that encompass the recognition of complete Moscow control over the Donbas as well as the military reduction of Ukraine – a impossible condition for Ukraine and its EU supporters.

Zelensky stated talks regarding the current lines were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Russia was "taking all measures" to evade negotiations.

He also said the only topic that could make Moscow "pay attention" was that of the supply of distance-capable munitions to the Ukrainian military.

Strategic Factors

Putin's spontaneous discussion with Trump last Thursday came ahead of speculation that the United States was preparing to send extended-range cruise missiles to Ukraine that could theoretically target deep into Russia.

Zelensky stated it was the missile discussion that had forced Russia to engage in discussion. The talk about the weapons systems had proven to be a "valuable contribution" in international relations", he added.
