Teacher Killed and 25 Girls Abducted in Firefight at School in Nigeria

Violent incident at school
Learning centers in Nigeria's northern region have often been targeted for militant organizations

Weapon-carrying attackers have taken the life of an instructor and seized a minimum of 25 learners in an raid targeting a girls' secondary school in north-western Nigeria, police reports indicate.

The gang of attackers stormed the public educational institution for female students in Maga, Kebbi State at approximately 04:00 local time on the beginning of the work week, officials stated.

The assailants "exchanged fire with security forces on duty in a shootout" before breaching the school's outer barrier and seizing the students from their hostel, according to a statement.

An educational worker was fatally shot while defending the students. A second sustained gunshot wounds and is now being treated medically.

Eyewitnesses described a sizeable number of assailants, identified in the area as outlaw groups, who arrived firing sporadically to create fear.

Area inhabitants disclosed to media that the gunmen subsequently marched a contingent of young women into adjacent wilderness.

The law enforcement confirmed they had positioned "supplementary tactical squads, alongside military personnel and local protection units" to the area.

A systematic finding and recovery effort is underway in surrounding forests and potential getaway paths.

In the past few years, educational institutions in Nigeria's north have increasingly been targeted for weapon-carrying factions, who routinely perform seizures to request monetary settlements or gain negotiating power with authorities.

The assault in Kebbi State underscores the continuing safety emergency afflicting the area, resulting in households in Maga in a state of fearful exhaustion as they wait and hope for their children's secure homecoming.

Safety emergency in the northern regions of Nigeria has escalated dramatically in the past few months, with learning centers bearing the brunt of the unrest.
