Sir Gareth Southgate has declared that he is not seeking a re-entry into football management, pointing out that it would be difficult to duplicate the unique sense of purpose he felt as head of the Three Lions.

He indicated his aim to dedicate his efforts toward engaging young people and countering what he called a dominant downbeat story now found in the country.

Pursuing New Avenues Beyond Football

Speaking on air, Southgate was questioned on speculation linking him with available jobs in the top flight and other leagues.

“I’ve had one of the most incredible jobs in football which also had a higher purpose because it was my country,” he responded. “That’s going to be very hard to replicate. Having had 37 years in football I’m enjoying finding other areas where I think I might be able to make a difference.”

A Passion for Role Models

Ahead of the launch of his new title, his leadership-focused book, the author emphasized that he is “very passionate” about offering guidance for the youth, applying insights from his tenure as head coach of the national side between 2016 and 2024, as well as his experiences as a parent.

Southgate believes that his journey managing the squad, during which the team evolved from being widely disliked to greatly admired, holds wider relevance.

“At the beginning, there was a major gap between the team and the fans,” he noted. “The public viewed the players as egotistical, yet we successfully reversed that image. The squad’s ability to connect diverse communities was truly powerful.”

Raising Children and Shaping the Next Generation

Reflecting on his role as a parent, he remarked: “Every parent aims to provide a solid foundation, yet there comes a time when children stop heeding parental advice. I’ve faced this at home, just like others, and I believe this area is critically important.”

He added: “A downbeat tone surrounds the nation now, and it’s essential to provide hope and advice to the younger generation. While talent abounds, accessing suitable mentors and peer networks is crucial, since these factors heavily influence lifelong outcomes.”

Unity Over Division

The former manager stressed that “what brings the nation together outweighs what pulls it apart” but that the cultural focus often centers on disagreement.

“One can see why many feel disillusioned,” he said. “Economically lots of places are in tough situations now and that’s going to prompt desires for change. But I have seen the ability to unite the country. I saw during Covid people doing shopping for the neighbours and that’s when we as a nation are at our best, when we’ve been pushed into a corner and come out and shown resilience.”

Southgate’s new release, titled Dear England, is scheduled to offer further insights on leadership and national identity based on his distinguished professional journey.
