The Legendary Jimmy Cliff, Reggae Legend and Cultural Icon, Dies at Eighty-One Years of Age

The world grieves the loss of the iconic Jimmy Cliff, the celebrated Jamaican musician and performer whose captivating vocal talent was instrumental in spreading reggae music across the globe. He passed away at the age of eighty-one.

“It’s with profound sadness that I announce that my beloved husband, Jimmy Cliff, has crossed over due to a seizure and subsequent pneumonia,” wrote his spouse Latifa on Instagram. “I am thankful for his loved ones, friends, fellow artists and coworkers who walked with him on his journey. To all his fans globally, please know that your support was his strength throughout his entire professional life … Jimmy, my dear, may you rest peacefully. I will honor your wishes.” The message was co-signed by their children, their son and daughter.

Jimmy Cliff was beloved for hits including “You Can Get It If You Really Want”, “I Can See Clearly Now” and Wonderful World, Beautiful People. His upbeat sound and uplifting spirit earned him a vast and loyal following.

In addition to his music accomplishments, Cliff took the lead role in the 1972’s crime drama The Harder They Come, a performance that was highly acclaimed and is viewed as a cornerstone of film in Jamaica.

He was among the select few of musicians, including Bob Marley and others, to be honored with the prestigious Jamaican Order of Merit.
