When I walk into the space, Lamine Camara picks up a football he won’t let go of until after our chat. It’s a powerful visual metaphor for a ambition he has never let slip. “I only wanted football; my mind was set on nothing else,” remarks the Monaco and Senegal midfielder.

His determination and natural ability convinced teams such as Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. Yet, the hardest approval to secure didn't come from a sporting director or coach, it was from his dad. “He was against me to play football but it’s because he had never watched me,” says Camara.

Overcoming Initial Obstacles

Eventually, on “one beautiful day,” Camara earned his dad's approval to chase his career in the sport. Another challenge was his modest frame, which discouraged local club Casa Sports from offering him a deal.

Nevertheless, Génération Foot – the institution that nurtured talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. Following Camara was named the best player in a regional tournament, Génération Foot were “astonished” to learn he was without a contract. They acted quickly. “They took me straight to the training centre. They prevented me from going back to Casamance,” Camara said.

An Unforgettable Season and Continental Breakthrough

This move set him on a trajectory to Europe. His breakthrough was 2023, “a year to remember,” which began with Camara winning the African Nations Championship. Shortly after, though tired, he played in the U-20 Africa Cup, leading his nation to victory and earning player of the tournament.

A month later, he was unveiled as Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Adapting was never a challenge,” states the 21-year-old. He has lived by himself in Europe, a choice his relatives encourage to maintain his concentration.

Influences and Playing Style

Off-field noise aren't a problem for Camara, who draws inspiration from Kevin De Bruyne’s “humility” and superb playing qualities. He is also a huge fan of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His ball striking and precision from dead-ball situations are key strengths. He admits a need to control his competitive fire, after being shown red at the start of his spells at both Metz and Monaco. “It's a trait that is following me!” he jokes.

Life at Monaco, Teammates and Upcoming Ambitions

At Monaco, he cherishes learning from veterans such as Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “When I heard about the interest in Pogba, I thought we are fortunate,” Camara noted.

Currently, his focus is firmly on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. After defeating England in their own country…,” he states, referencing a historic 3-1 victory in Nottingham.

On a potential future move to the English top flight, he remains committed to Monaco for now. “I feel really at ease here,” he insists. However, he's often ribbed by icon El-Hadji Diouf about his two Best Young Player awards. Camara jokes, but is serious about targeting the senior Africa Player of the Year down the line.

“The pressure is on us – we can’t hide from that. Having beaten England in their own country… it instills belief.”

Looking ahead, this talented midfielder combines a modest start, unwavering focus, and big dreams targeting to lead Senegal to Afcon success and build his own legendary path in the game.
