The people of Israel mark second anniversary of 7 October attacks as Palestinian ceasefire negotiations continue
Israelis have come together around the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-conducted assault on October 7th, 2023, as discussions advanced in Egypt over a resolution to the war in the Gaza Strip.
The attack saw over 1,200 people killed and 251 others taken away to Gaza as hostages. It was the uniquely most fatal day for Jewish people since the Holocaust.
Israel reacted by initiating a defensive operation in Gaza which has claimed more than 67,000 people, according to the area's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its numbers are seen as trustworthy by the UN and other world agencies.
"Our aggressive opponents have hit us hard, but they have not defeated us," the prime minister remarked on that day.
He also pledged to "achieve all the goals of the war: the return of all the abducted, the elimination of the Hamas regime and the assurance that Gaza will never again create a risk to Israel".
Memorial Events Across Israel
The Israeli government postponed formal memorials until October 16th - after the end of the festive season - but gatherings still occurred around the country on that day.
A commemorative event for the families of Israelis killed in the Hamas assault was conducted in the coastal city. Organized by the victims' relatives, it was aired throughout Israeli TV networks.
Hours earlier, a minute's silence was held throughout the country.
Negotiation Meetings in Egypt
Meanwhile, the conflicting parties' representatives convened in the North African tourist destination of Sharm el-Sheikh for a continuing round of mediated discussions to review the conditions of the proposal.
A senior Palestinian official involved in the talks indicated that an evening round of negotiations commenced at evening in Egypt.
The representative said the day's discussions ended without tangible results, because of disagreements over the suggested Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over assurances Hamas wants to ensure Israel does not restart hostilities after the initial stage of the deal.
He commented that the discussions are "tough and have still not achieve any major advancement," but mentioned that intermediaries are working hard to narrow the differences between the two sides.
Critical Issues in Negotiations
- A lasting truce
- The swap of the hostages still held by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The pullout of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Plans for humanitarian aid deliveries
- Post-war administration of the area
Citizen Reaction
In Tel Aviv's memorial area previously, 29-year-old a woman - whose family member endured the assault on the gathering, where 378 people were killed and numerous more were abducted by Hamas gunmen - explained: "No location appears as home anymore and until every captive come back none of us will feel safe."
"When we see everybody home returned, we can feel relief again. Then we can begin to rebuild," she concluded.
In front of the leader's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people gathered to demonstrate their support for the relatives of the captives. Israel says nearly fifty stay in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be alive.
Activist Atalia Regev remarked: "It's necessary do whatever arrangement necessary for the captives to come back home. But we sincerely need promises that we will be safe."
Opinion polls now regularly indicate that around the majority of the population desire the war to finish in exchange for the liberation of the hostages.
Gaza Conditions
At the location of Nova festival, mourners came together to pay their respects.
From there, the noise of aerial bombardments and shelling could be noticed just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the severe Israeli attacks persisted.
In the urban center, air and artillery strikes were documented in the morning of that day in the western Tal al-Hawa, Rimal and zone neighbourhoods and in the east side area of that sector, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwest.
"As the evening comes, the dread appears with it," displaced Gaza City resident a local woman, whose 17-year-old son was died by an Israeli bombing previously, shared.
"My family are fearful of the attacks. During nighttime we are lying together, embracing, especially my youngest child who places his head on me the entire evening."
"Every second we monitor the updates to see the situation. And I'm worried that this halt will not be achieved and that the conflict will resume to us."
Health Situation
The medical facility in the urban area announced it had taken in the corpses of six people by the daytime, including a trio killed in an Israeli bombing in the southern area.
Nasser hospital in the southern city of that area said two more dead people had been transported. A person was lost his life by Israeli troops while looking for aid to the south, medical staff reported.
