The Reason Real Madrid Have 'Total Trust' in Teenager Thiago Pitarch
Whenever a teenage makes club a historic moment in a crucial European match against Manchester City, it inevitably draws acclaim and the spotlight.
In only his first start in the competition - and fifth game for the team - the young midfielder suitably impressed as the fifteen-time Champions League winners claimed a three-nil round of 16 first-leg advantage at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The teenager, who also made his club debut in the play-off round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then assisted Los Blancos overcome the English Premier League side in the midweek return to secure a quarter-final place.
Aged 18 years old, Pitarch was the team's youngest player to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing star Vini Jr's record by 10 days.
Rapid Ascent Through La Fabrica
The midfielder is the most recent to emerge from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most promising young players.
He signed for Madrid from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe's academies, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he quickly made a strong impression.
He progressed to the B team and it was in a friendly match in which they played against the senior squad, then managed by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who took over from Xabi Alonso in January.
Spanish media would later label the moment as "love at first sight," noting Pitarch stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, character and determination he brought to the side.
'His Greatest Quality Is His Character'
In the summer of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso called up Pitarch to train with the first team and gave him minutes in the warm-up matches.
However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that proved the defining moment in his development as he came on as a late substitute in each leg against Benfica that set up the meeting with Manchester City.
"I have dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the first day I began playing football, each day you go to train and every day you play a match," stated Pitarch following his first appearance.
"I have just fulfilled my ambition with the greatest club in the planet and in the top tournament."
Handed a starting debut in La Liga against Getafe - where he was for four years after moving from Atleti in 2018 - he has kept his place for the next four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opening.
The teenager has seized it with performances that have belied his age and inexperience.
"He is a very quick footballer, and you can see his capabilities," said the coach. "He's incredibly dynamic, with excellent endurance, effort and mobility."
The player's mindset has also impressed his coach.
"His greatest quality is his personality," added Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the ball, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.
"I realize people are surprised to see him make his debut in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had complete confidence in him to do his normal game.
"He will keep receiving chances with the main squad. It's a pleasure to coach a talent like him."
A Future International Decision
Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up fully immersed in the local game, moving through youth setups before joining the club's famous La Fabrica system.
He possesses dual Spanish and Moroccan citizenship, offering him the choice to represent either country at the highest level.
According to Fifa eligibility rules, players may represent different countries at junior level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only final once they play in a competitive full international.
He has played for the Spanish national team at youth level, representing both the U19 and U20 sides, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where Spain reached the quarter-finals.
Nevertheless, he has yet to commit to either full national side, who are watching his rise with keen attention.
Speaking recently, the player confirmed: "I haven't made my final decision so far. Things are positive with the Spanish federation, but I will reach a conclusion soon."
This scenario echoes that of other bi-national players such as club colleague Diaz and Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal. Whereas teenage Lamine chose La Roja, Brahim opted to play for Morocco.
Eyes on the Prize
At present, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and repaying his manager's belief.
He featured for over an hour in the two-one victory at City, which completed a five-one aggregate success and a last-eight tie with Bayern Munich.
His substitution by another academy player in Manuel Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in the next generation to help the team pursue trophies to come.
After his notable contributions to date on the Champions League, Pitarch is tipped to play a key role in that.
"The manager treats me the identical way. We handle it very naturally. I attempt not to overanalyze it excessively - I must earn my minutes on the field," he commented following the success at Etihad Stadium.
