A comprehensive search and recovery mission is currently ongoing in the Caribbean waters for a pair of missing boats transporting humanitarian supplies en route from the Mexican coast to Havana.

Maritime Rescue Operations Launched

Authorities in Mexico has sent naval teams and reconnaissance aircraft to find the two vessels, which were had on board at least 9 personnel, as stated by a navy statement.

The boats had been scheduled to reach Havana on the early part of the week, but there has been radio silence from them and zero verification of their arrival, authorities reported.

Background of Humanitarian Support to the Nation

The Caribbean nation has depended significantly on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over the past few weeks, as the island grapples with repeated power outages across the country.

"The crews and captains are experienced sailors, and both vessels are fitted with proper safety systems and signalling equipment," an official associated with the mission commented.

The nine individuals on board are citizens of France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Mexico said it has established contact with coast guard agencies from those nations along with their consular staff.

"The group is collaborating completely with the officials and remain confident in the capability of the sailors to reach Havana safely," the official further stated.

Previous Humanitarian Shipment

Previously that week, the government in Havana warmly welcomed and warmly received another boat that had delivered a significant amount of relief supplies to the island.

That vessel, called "Granma 2.0" after the vessel in which Fidel Castro came back to Cuba to launch the revolution in the mid-20th century, carried solar panels, drugs, formula milk, bicycles and food.

Broader International Climate

Volunteers and NGOs have primarily led efforts to bring essential supplies to Cuba beginning in January, a period which saw a energy blockade on the island nation was initiated.

International organizations have since highlighted ""severe" shortages of supplies, with over 50,000 surgical procedures called off in Cuba because of power shortages.

Diplomatic tensions have been ramped up over the past months, with statements from several leaders emphasizing the complicated state of relations.

In response to previous statements, a senior government figure declared that "the governance model of Cuba is non-negotiable."

Accounts suggest that initial phases of talks commenced, although their present status remains uncertain.

The Mexican navy said it was pledged to using all of the resources at its disposal to find the sailboats and secure the well-being of the sailors.

At this time, there has been silence on the disappeared vessels by the Cuban leadership.
