US Armed Forces Conducts Deadly Attack in Pacific, Resulting in 4 Fatalities
According to a high-ranking defense spokesperson, the American armed forces executed a lethal strike on a boat in the Pacific Ocean, killing four individuals.
“A US joint task force conducted a deadly attack on a craft operated by a Designated Terrorist Organization in open sea. Intelligence verified the vessel was traveling along a established drug smuggling route and was involved in narco-trafficking operations. All four male narco-terrorists were killed, and no US military forces were harmed.”
Background and Prior Actions
This announcement comes a day after an announcement regarding a naval blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela. That statement on social media, the US president accused Venezuela of using oil revenues to fund drug trafficking and other crimes, vowing to escalate the military presence.
Only on the previous day, US defense officials stated it had carried out strikes on three boats it accused of smuggling narcotics in the Pacific, killing eight people. Since 2 September, over 20 military engagements have killed at least 99 individuals, most off the coast of Venezuela.
Government Defends Tactics Amid Scrutiny
The government has encountered growing pressure to make public video of a September 2nd vessel attack. However, officials have declined to do so. The administration has defended its efforts as a successful operation, saying it has prevented drugs from entering US shores and has pushed back on concerns that it is exceeding the bounds of lawful warfare.
Although the administration has stated the operation is about stopping drugs destined for the US, remarks from a senior aide appeared to suggest a wider political aim. In a recent interview, the senior advisor remarked the president “wants to keep on blowing boats up until the Venezuelan president surrenders or concedes.”
This suggests the military campaign may be part of a strategy to oust Venezuela's current leadership.
