While Beachgoers Fled Danger, Viral Picture Captures Rescuer Dashing ‘All Out’ Towards the Site.

Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as inhabitant of Bondi, describes the renowned coast as her personal space. On that particular weekend evening, she, similar to other local residents, heard cracking sounds ringing out across the neighbourhood.

“We all thought the same, but I reasoned it was daylight and you couldn't spot any lights,” Ching recounts. Stepping out of her residence, she witnessed people “flooding up Bondi Road”. Their expressions on display signaled trouble had occurred.

Positioned on the street, talking to a pair who had hurried up the incline still dripping wet, she noticed someone coming up at her rear. The person was a rescuer, running at full speed in the direction of Bondi barefoot from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while carrying a defibrillator.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I just saw this streak in blue,” she recounts. “He was simply racing by. It was just him running in the opposite way that all the others was trying to flee, and hauling that sizeable pack and barefoot … He’s running at something that undoubtedly every instinct would tell you to go in the other direction.

“Just no hesitation, but just totally maximum effort running.”

A Symbol of Heroism During Crisis

The photograph taken by Ching of the rescuer, now known to be Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as one of many acts of valour in the aftermath of the terror attack.

Andy Reid, a second beach safety officer, explained that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, hurried from Tamarama beach to assist the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to aid emergency personnel, police and medical teams treating dozens of victims.

Local Reaction and Solidarity

Doolan’s actions was just one of many to emerge from the local area, with the lifeguard clubhouse adjacent to the site of the attack becoming a temporary treatment center. It was shared that colleagues were also seen helping out, for instance entering the surf to save people in distress.

In the days after the tragedy, statements of support flooded in. One post expressed gratitude for the individuals who showed that “compassion will always overcome darkness”.

The squad of lifeguards issued a message, saying they were “processing what occurred”.

“Our thanks go out to all for your thoughtful sentiments and encouragement. We are overwhelmed by the kindness directed at our responders,” the team commented. “In time, we will tell our tales in the hope that it aids those affected.”

Council Recognition

Waverley council, the local authority that employs many professional beach safety officers, remarked that the crew rose to the occasion from the instant the violence started through to late that night.

“We have heard so many moving accounts, but the viral image of Jackson Doolan, sprinting from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help preserve life is extraordinary,” commented a council representative.

“These individuals exhibit altruism every day in ensuring our internationally renowned shores protected for the public, but what we witnessed on that day should be celebrated.

“As we grieve and come to terms with the horror of this brutal and barbaric act of violence, I think it is crucial that we consider just how much light we have witnessed in the face of such darkness.”
